Myles Reeve
Now 22 years old and living in Edinburgh, I originally grew up as a missionary child in Mozambique and South Africa but come from a Brazilian/ English background. My passion is design and I’m in my 4th year of an interior and spatial design course. My hobbies include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Art and reading. The future is hopefully moving to Japan but I’ve always considered my life in Gods hands. My father who is both a reverend and a Dr in the studies of theology has greatly influenced my passion for biblical literature and an appreciation for the world around me. My aim is to share how valuable life can really be and I don’t think that’s at all unfair to try to do.
In the September of 2001 I was born in London where I then moved to Portugal after a number of weeks for my father to learn Portuguese in preparation for my family’s move to Africa. After 6 months spent in Portugal we moved to Mozambique which was still recovering from a back to back war of independence and then civil war. I remember to this day some of the explosive remnants of war being set off in the city of Maputo one evening and having to prop up my mattress to shield from the window glass smashing through. My years in Africa made me who I am however and have been the core pillars of my life and attitudes. Over approximately 9 years I would visit areas of South Africa, Eswatini and a lot of southern Mozambique. During this time I also returned to London on a number of occasions for my brother and sister to be born where my family was kindly taken in to the beautiful area that is Wimbledon. I went to a number of schools in Wimbledon usually lasting around 6 months at a time. I did also manage to visit Brazil and reconnect with my South American family who again are a huge part of my identity. I’ve gone through a long process to keep my dual citizenship with talk of military service floating around for many years. After then making my way back to the UK to help my grandparents I went to live in Cheshire in the north of England. Manchester became my city and I had great teenage years in a very nice town. The city of Edinburgh had always been in my life however as my dad had been completing his PhD in theology out of the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. I visited a number of times for my father to discuss his thesis and then finally came to choose the city as my new home after some close friends married here. Thankfully my studies have also taken precedence in more recent years and I can continue to do what I love which is designing. As well as a personal passion, I aim to make design the bedrock of my future career and definitely intend to continue travelling with this profession. I may be naive in my thinking of how far I can go with it but then again I think I’ve done pretty well so far. As I’ve said already, at the end of the day my plans in life are only ever a shadow of what I believe in, my faith is by far the most personally valuable thing to me and has been my assisting hand in some very tough times indeed. With the words of C.S.Lewis I close, The man who is contented to be only himself, and therefore less a self, is in prison. My own eyes are not enough for me, I will see through those of others. Reality, even seen through the eyes of many, is not enough. I will see what others have invented …. in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem, I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see. Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing, I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do. —C. S. Lewis
